    Illinois Supreme Court 2017 Criminal Cases:
    Year in Review

    Please join Illinois Appellate Court Justice Joseph Birkett (Second District); Illinois Appellate Court Justice James Epstein (retired, First District) (in Chicago) or Justice Stuart Palmer (retired, First District) (in Wheaton); Leah Bendik, Illinois Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Appeals Division; and James Chadd, Deputy State Appellate Defender, Office of the State Appellate Defender, for a panel discussion of significant criminal cases decided by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2017. ALA Secretary Gretchen Harris Sperry will moderate the discussion.

    MCLE: Participants in Chicago will earn 1.5 hours of MCLE credit from the ALA. Participants in Wheaton will earn 1.5 hours of MCLE credit from the DCBA. Both the ALA and the DCBA are approved MCLE providers.

    Cost: 
    Free for members of the ALA or the DCBA or the AABA, and $25 for those who are not members of any of the three sponsoring organizations. Please remember to bring your own lunch to this event. Beverages will be provided.

    for the Seventh Circuit

    As part of our continuing efforts to bring premium programming to our members, the Appellate Lawyers Association is pleased to offer an informative and engaging video CLE program featuring Judges Diane Sykes and David Hamilton of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which was recorded at the Union League Club of Chicago.

              The program focuses on how judges judge. Originalism? Textualism? Pragmatism? Judges Sykes and Hamilton discuss their judicial philosophies and provide an in-depth look at the differing ways that judges approach statutory and constitutional interpretation. 

              Judge Sykes was appointed to the Seventh Circuit in 2004. She was a justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court from 1999 to 2004 and before that served as a trial court judge in Milwaukee County for seven years.

              Judge Hamilton has served on the Seventh Circuit since 2009. From 1994 to 2009, he was a judge and the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

    Among the most widely recognized and respected voices in national legal journalism, Mr. Liptak graduated from Yale Law School and worked at a New York law firm before joining The New York Times Company’s legal department in 1992. He has covered the Supreme Court since 2008. His front-page stories and regular “Sidebar” column have come to play a critical role in our national dialogue on the law and our judicial system. Mr. Liptak’s work also has appeared in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Business Week, and the American Lawyer. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2009, and he received the Scripps Howard Award in 2010 for a series of pieces on the Roberts Court.

    At this event, Mr. Liptak offered his reflections on the Supreme Court’s last decade, discussed the challenges and rewards he faces as a national legal reporter, and shared stories from the front lines covering our nation’s highest court.

    Dean Chemerinsky discusses five topics relating to the U.S. Supreme Court: the possible outcomes of a 4-4 split on the Court; the pivotal role of Justice Anthony Kennedy; the centrality of issues relating to race in many of the Court’s cases; the confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch; and the long-term picture for the Court. 

    Dean Chemerinsky is an expert on constitutional law, federal practice, civil rights, civil liberties, and appellate litigation. He is the author of ten books and more than 200 law review articles. He frequently argues appellate cases, including in the U.S. Supreme Court.
